Workshop: Mosaic - giving seconds a second life!

Timing info! We will break from 12 PM to 1 PM to allow for the glue to dry. Folks can use this time to go get some lunch or a snack.
As ceramicists, we end up with a lot of glazed work we don't know what to do with. This workshop is about giving it a second life. We'll take unwanted glazeware, break it down, and use it to create mosaics on bisqueware forms like planters, trinket dishes, or whatever your base piece calls for.
In this workshop you will:
- Learn how to break glazeware with intention to create usable mosaic pieces
- Practice using bisqueware as a canvas for a glazeware mosaic
- Learn best practices for gluing and grouting to set and finish a mosaic
What you will walk away with:
- A finished or in-progress mosaic piece
- Experience breaking, placing, and grouting glazeware
- A new way to think about and repurpose finished ceramic work
Who is this workshop best for?
Open to anyone.
Materials provided
Broken glazeware, glue, grout, hammers, chisels, and tile pliers.
What must attendees bring?
Bisqueware to use as your base and any unwanted glazeware you'd like to break down. We will also have some bisqueware available for use.
Other important info
- This workshop will include a 1 hour break between hour 2 & 3, which is necessary drying time.
- No firing required. Pieces are ready to take home the same day.
About the instructor
Atlas Thomas is a sculptor, ceramicist, and art historian. His focus is on multiple forms of craft, and the limitless possibilities of combining different practices. They draw inspiration from the histories and traditions of ceramics, glass, textiles, and woodwork to create art that is an extension of the individual craft.
